HUNTABLE GAME AT UMLINGO LODGE - Ellipse Wasserbuck!
The ellipse waterbuck is a large and robust antelope species, weighing up to 270 kg. It is easily recognizable by its shaggy, gray-brown coat and the distinctive white ring around the base of its tail, which gives it its name. Only the males bear the long, heavily ridged horns that are widely curved and sweep forward.
These antelopes have a shoulder height of about 1.30 meters. The horns of the males can be quite impressive, often extending well beyond their heads, making them a prized trophy for hunters.
Waterbucks prefer areas near water sources such as rivers, lakes, and swamps, as they rely on these for drinking and as a refuge from predators. They are excellent swimmers and will take to water to escape threats. Their diet primarily consists of grasses, but they will also browse on leaves and shoots when necessary.
The shaggy coat of the ellipse waterbuck is not just for appearance; it provides insulation against the cool waters and helps to keep the animal buoyant while swimming. This thick fur also secretes a greasy substance that makes the waterbuck's coat water-resistant, aiding in its aquatic lifestyle.
Typically, waterbucks are found in herds that can range from small family groups to larger aggregations. The social structure is usually composed of females and their offspring, while males may either be solitary or form bachelor groups, especially younger males.
The ellipse waterbuck's impressive size, unique markings, and challenging habitat make it a highly sought-after species for hunters seeking a memorable experience at Umlingo Lodge.
