HUNTABLE GAME AT UMLINGO LODGE - Nyala!
The Nyala is a beautiful and elusive antelope species, easily recognizable by its striking appearance and size. Nyalas reach a head-body length of approximately 140 cm and a shoulder height of 110 cm. They weigh between 55 and 125 kg, with males being significantly larger and heavier than females.
Male nyalas are particularly impressive with their long, spiral horns, which can grow up to 83 cm. They have a shaggy, dark brown to slate-gray coat, often with white vertical stripes and spots on the flanks, and a conspicuous fringe along the belly. Males also sport a distinct white chevron between their eyes, enhancing their majestic look.
Female and young nyalas lack horns and have a short, sleek, brownish-yellow coat with more prominent white vertical stripes and spots, providing them with excellent camouflage in their woodland habitats. They typically live in small family groups, consisting of females and their offspring, which helps in nurturing and protecting the young.
Nyalas are predominantly browsers, feeding on leaves, twigs, flowers, and fruits, although they may occasionally graze on grass. Their diet changes with the seasons and availability of food sources.
These antelopes prefer dense woodlands and thickets, often near water sources, where they can find both food and cover from predators. Nyalas are shy and elusive, making them a challenging and rewarding target for hunters.
The social structure of nyalas includes small family groups for females and juveniles, while males are more solitary, especially as they age. Older bulls are often found alone, except during the mating season when they actively seek out females.
The nyala's elegant appearance, combined with its elusive nature and the challenge it presents, makes it a highly prized game animal for hunters visiting Umlingo Lodge.
